Building Tu’lia’s Staff: Into Base Camp
Tu’lia’s Staff, a hero narrative asset for Planet Postmoderna: The Advent, is now in the Unity HDRP Base Camp scene. It has been integrated there and checked visually. That completes the handoff from the cleanup in Maya, through material authoring in Substance Painter, into the engine.
Earlier updates followed the staff one section at a time inside Substance Painter. These images are the first to show the whole staff in the environment it was made for.
Why the environment matters
In the story, Tu’lia left the staff to help protect the settlers at Base Camp after John Baxter disappeared two years earlier. The design goal was for the staff to read as important without looking like an exaggerated fantasy weapon. It should suggest ancient origin, revered ownership, handcrafted construction, careful preservation, a subtle alien influence, and protective symbolism.
The reaction we want is curiosity. Viewers should wonder who owned the staff, why it was left behind, and why the settlers still keep it somewhere so visible. You can only judge that in context, under the scene’s lighting, at the distances the camera will actually see it from.
From source model to scene
The staff started as an AI-generated interpretation of existing Tu’lia artwork. That gave it a strong conceptual starting point, but it still needed cleanup and refinement. Before changing anything, the model was fully inspected in Maya. The topology and UV layout turned out to be ready for production. Two displaced feather elements needed repositioning, and no retopology or UV rebuild was required. It was a useful reminder to inspect an imported asset before rebuilding it.
In Substance Painter, the materials were developed region by region:
- the skull and polished horn of the crown
- feather-shaped ornaments treated as carved turquoise mineral rather than literal feathers
- directional wood grain and aged brass fittings
- the purple grip and carved-bone section
- the crossed diagonal leather wrap
- the turquoise-and-brass crystal setting and the purple crystal at the base
Throughout, wear was kept in service of the story. The staff should look used and cared for, not abandoned, consistent with two years at Base Camp.
The final Substance step was a restrained emissive treatment for the purple crystal. The glow is concentrated in its fracture structure, so the energy seems to sit inside the crystal instead of making the whole surface glow evenly. In Unity HDRP, the purple-crystal emissive was validated at 5 Nits under Base Camp lighting, keeping the glow restrained. The textures were exported as a 4K HDRP set and a pipeline-neutral PBR master set kept for future Built-in and URP work.
The in-scene presentation set
For this milestone, a set of in-scene captures was selected: a full-staff hero view, an upper-crown detail, a lower-assembly detail, and a wider Base Camp context view.
The lower-detail framing was refined so the full purple crystal stays in frame, along with the transition from the purple grip through the carved bone, curved wood, leather, and the turquoise and brass setting. Keeping the complete crystal in view turned out to be essential to showing the finished assembly. Together, the full-object, detail, and environment views show the staff’s silhouette, its material craft, and its narrative context.
The same captures were also used to build a one-page HA-001 hero asset sheet. It leads with the full staff, supported by crown and lower-detail panels, a smaller environment image, and short material callouts. The corrected sheet has been reviewed and approved for presentation quality. Its layout preserves the screenshots’ aspect ratios and stays within their native resolution at the intended screen size. A downloadable PDF is planned alongside the blog’s individual screenshots.

What’s next
This milestone covers HDRP visual integration and presentation. Validation in URP, the render pipeline used for The Advent itself, is still pending. No performance measurements have been recorded yet. The staff’s broader Production Complete milestone also remains open.
Development Status: Unity HDRP Validation: Complete. Unity URP Validation: Pending.
